New SunButter

This comes from Jodi Vlam, from the District Food Services...

Beginning this year, we have had changes to the nutritional requirements for all school meals as a result of USDA regulatory changes. One of the most significant requirements has been the need for children to take a fruit or vegetable serving for lunch. We have found that a great number of elementary students already select a fruit or vegetable each day for lunch.  The selection is only part of the process and we hope that each of us, Nutrition Services, Principals and faculty can encourage students to eat all of their lunches and reduce waste.

I have attached a brochure that has been developed and is being printed for clarification.  This could be helpful for you as you receive questions from parents or faculty.  Also attached is an article placed in the districts July newspaper regarding Sunbutter sandwiches.  These sandwiches were added this year for use as an emergency meal and a sandwich option for field trips. Sunbutter sandwiches are not made from nuts and do not cause a risk to  students with a peanut/nut allergy.

Pizza offered this year has a new taste and look to meet new nutritional requirements.  We have changed to a 51% whole grain crust, a lower sodium pizza sauce and reduced fat pepperoni.  The reformulated recipe is currently being evaluated and we hope to continue improving all choices and finding ways to meet student preferences.

And I thought this flyer might be of some interest.
