May 31 is the last day of school!
We want to say Congratulations to the 6th graders that will be heading to the Jr High next year! We will miss you!
Also, we have several wonderful teachers that won't be at Manila next year. We want to wish them well in all they do and give them a big THANK YOU for all they have done at Manila. They are Janna Kunz, Heather Butterfield, Darlene Garlick, Katie Landry and Hannah Vincent.
A big shout out for those students who were honored at the Flag Ceremony today for getting over 95% on their CRT test scores. Well done! We had so many, it was amazing!
And last, but not least, a HUGE THANK YOU to Melissa Lindstrom, our 2011-2012 PTA President, for all she did for the school this year! She has been a fabulous leader and we will miss her!
Taking the best from the past and moving forward to help students and parents be successful in their education.

Dance Festival
Dance Festival is coming up!! If you are a first time parent at Manila, have you got a fun morning in store for you!!! If you are a returning parent, you know what I mean! Dance Festival is a wonderful tradition at Manila that will be held this year on Friday, May 25th at 9:30am. This is also an 8:00 common start day. Each grade level performs a dance for the parents. They set up on the North part of the field. There is an area set up with chairs for parents, or some parents bring their own chairs and set them behind where the students sit. (Note... you may want to ask your child where they perform. With that many children, it is kind of hard to pick out your child.) The teachers choreograph the dance, and I know they try to have every child be seen and they also do a good job of having the kids face different directions. The kids LOVE dancing for their parents. All right, most of them love performing for their parents. It is really fun to see them all. Also, the teachers perform and I personally think that one is the most fun to watch! This event is pretty crowded, because it is the whole school, but there is plenty of space. If you want to get a front row seat, however, you need to plan on being there early. But if you get there too early, just remember there are three sides that the kids will be bringing chairs out and sitting in, so you can't set up your chairs there. Even if you are in the back, most of the time the parents that have a child performing in the grade level dance go to the front to record or take pictures. We just all need to remember that this is a fun activity and we need to be patient with each other when we are trying to get that perfect picture or video of our child! :) Some years, parents have checked their children out of school after the Dance Festival is over, but this year, we are hoping that won't happen. The first round of the talent show will be held this same day at 1:00 and we are hoping to have all students stay in school to support the other students. All in all, try to remember that this is a great way to celebrate our children and we are all there to have fun.
6th Grade Party
The 6th grade party is a fun day for the 6th graders to celebrate their successes in grade school and their moving onto Jr. High. This year is the first year that they are getting to go to the Pleasant Grove Pool. It should be a lot of fun! It is coming up on Thursday, May 24 from 1:00-3:00. Congratulations to our fine 6th graders! We will miss you and we know you will go on to make Manila proud!

Grade Up Day
Grade up day, held on May 21 this year, is such a fun and exciting day!!! This is a day when all of the students (except the 6th grade) get to spend the day in the grade they will be in next year. It helps them to meet the different teachers in that grade, see the classrooms, and get a little more comfortable about the upcoming change. There has often been speculation that the teacher the students go to on their first rotation will be the teacher they get for the next year, but this is just speculation. No classes are set yet, and some teachers will be moving positions. Parents, please be understanding of this, and know that ALL of the teachers at Manila are fantastic, and all of them work very hard and do their best for our children. I know Dr. Sorensen is happy to address any parent's concerns, but I also know she is super busy at this time of year, and if we flood her with calls about not liking the teacher that our children went to first, she won't be able to accomplish the things she needs to do. Please be patient, optimistic, and flexible. And remember that one person's opinion about a teacher may not be what your opinion ends up being... All of our teachers have our children's best interests at heart!

Summer Reading
In the PTA, we believe that literacy is one of the most important things we can support. It is so important to have your children read through the summer! I know it gets crazy and everyone is busy, but it is amazing what just 20 minutes a day will do to keep your child improving their reading skills. Please make sure your children are getting reading time each day!
The Pleasant Grove City Library has a lot of really fun summer programs available. Please Click Here to go to their website and get more information. There are programs for children from 18 months to 18 years and even some for us adults!!! Registration for the summer reading program starts May 21st. Our own school library has a summer checkout program as well. Mrs. Webster does a fantastic job of keeping the students supplied with great books! Dates are June 7, June 14, June 21, June 28, July 5, July 12, July 19, July 26, CLOSED August 2, LAST DATE August 9.
